Sound Off

Kindergarten

I could not agree more with "Need Options" in regards to the Methuen kindergarten program. A full day of kindergarten is too much for a child who is 5 years old and in most cases the first time away from home. They should have half days of kindergarten, half in the morning, switching over to half days in the afternoon halfway through the year.

Too loud

I live in the lower end of North Andover. Can anybody explain why the music coming from Lawrence was so incredibly loud on Saturday night? Not only do I wish not to hear it, shutting my windows would not muffle it. It seems to me that a culture exists in Lawrence that has absolutely no respect for other people's quality of life.

Will of majority

Since President Obama took office, I'm reminded how the "will of the majority" was rejected and even disdained by our elected officials. Democrats, controlling both houses with veto-proof authority, along with a socialist president, were unrestricted in pushing through their liberal agenda. As you go to the polls, remember how your representatives pushed through a health care plan against the will of the majority of Americans using legislative trickery, increased the national debt to unimaginable levels and created stimulus bills that did nothing more than expand the powers of the federal government.

Forgotten middle-class

When I read the Sound Off "What next?" I thought someone had written my biography with one exception — at least he or she can still pay the bills! I have worked hard and honestly for 43 years and find myself one of the thousands of middle-aged workers scraping bottom. This country has turned its back on middle-class Americans.

Outrageous demand

It is absolutely outrageous that the Kennedys think they can go on raping our pockets with a demand for $62 million for a memorial to the late, great Ted Kennedy. Just who do they think they are? Perhaps they should realize that there many, many people in this state who did not like the guy, and did not support his socialistic ideas. Not one more penny for this bunch of leeches and hangers-on.

Here to stay

I read in the paper today that Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck want to return us back to American values. If it means narrowing the gap between the affluent and the middle-class like it always was before, good. But do they really mean to abolish taxes like in the 1920s and 1930s so you don't pay taxes but you get nothing in return such as Social Security or unemployment? Whether some people like it or not, Social Security and unemployment are here to stay.

Deal with it

Stop the whining about Mayor Manzi. I agree with the caller who said "Mayor Manzi has been elected by the people of Methuen"! Folks, it's been three elections. Deal with it!

Tone it down

I think it's great that the Hispanics got to celebrate their heritage during the festival in Lawrence over the weekend. The music was so loud, though, that it resonated to my home in North Andover. My house was actually vibrating from the bass. It was bad enough on Saturday night, but we had to put up with it again on Sunday. I can only imagine what it must have been like actually being there. The police should have stepped in and had them tone it down.
