Letter: Mosque would reopen Sept. 11 wounds

To the editor:

I believe that letter writers Mary and Jim Todd should write for Aesop as their letter of Aug. 12 in The Eagle-Tribune was a beautiful fairy tale which would be a wondrous gift to the world. But just how do we affect this peace when we are surrounded by our enemies, both at home and abroad? I will attempt to respond to this letter and hope that I may glean some facts which logic has so far eluded me.

I quote from that letter, "All major religions have the message of peace." Have they ever heard of the jihad (holy war) that has kidnapped people, tortured and killed them in the name of "Allah"? Is this religious belief or fanaticism?

I do not believe the opposition over the building of the mosque, but the pain of the survivors would be rekindled over the evil loss of their loved ones. I really believe no Muslims suffered from that loss. Where are the figures to validate that statement?

People come to America from all parts of the world; something draws them here, be it our educational system, our beauty and customs, religions or, in some cases, merely to draw on our resources, erroneously feeling that they are entitled by virtue of being here. Whatever the case, they should not try to impose their beliefs, customs or language on us. You chose to come to America, now become an American. You are free to exercise your culture, but do not try to force it on us. We like America just as it is.

I would like to believe, without reservations, that this mosque would actually be used as a Muslim religious community center. Or will it possibly offer them a safe haven to plot and scheme against America as I fear for this country?

I sincerely hope that those who come to our shores would allow us the opportunity to respect and welcome them. However, respect must be earned, not merely demanded. We do not stereotype or show resentment against religious beliefs or customs. Freedom does not come without a price tag. All America asks is that you live your lives according to our laws and customs.
