Two die in Haverhill car crash minutes after being stopped for speeding

HAVERHILL — A Haverhill man who was stopped for allegedly driving too fast on Interstate 495 sped away from a state police trooper and minutes later crashed his car, killing himself and a passenger early yesterday, state police said.

The driver of the 1990 Honda Accord was identified as Jose Gonzalez, 29, of Haverhill, state police Capt. Barry O'Brien said last night. The passenger was identified as Samuel Paulino, 28, of Lawrence.

State police said Trooper Matthew Topping spotted the car allegedly speeding on Interstate 495 north in Haverhill about 12:30 a.m. Topping followed the car onto Route 110 south where it came to a stop adjacent to a Dunkin' Donuts right off the highway.

As Topping approached the car, Gonzalez sped away, state police said.

Speeding down Route 110, Gonzalez sideswiped another Honda Accord driven by Luis Quintana Jr., 19, of Methuen. Quintana was not injured, state police said.

But Gonzalez lost control of the car, crossed into the oncoming travel lane, veered into the left shoulder and struck a telephone pole. The car came to rest after striking the corner of 447 River St., a two-family home owned by Jihad Maroun. No one in the home was injured.

The house is a mile from the Dunkin' Donuts where Gonzalez was first pulled over. The crash left holes in the home's foundation. A utility box hung from the side of the house. Glass and plastic were shattered on the ground.

Both men were taken by medical helicopters to Boston hospitals where they were pronounced dead.

The accident shut down traffic on Route 110 for more than two hours.

Later yesterday, friends and family set up memorials with candles and notes at the River Street home.

While speed appears to be a factor in the crash, the accident remains under investigation by a state police accident reconstruction team and crime scene services. Haverhill police and firefighters and a MassHighway crew assisted troopers at the scene.

The mangled Honda was towed to Coady's in Lawrence, where it was impounded by state police.
