Police: Methuen woman drove drunk with children in car

By Jim Patten

METHUEN — Police said a 28-year-old Methuen mother of three was driving drunk when she struck a parked vehicle and drove away with her children in the car.

Capt. Randy Haggar, commander of the Field Services Bureau, said a motorist used a cell phone to alert police about the hit-and-run accident Monday night around 10, and followed the car until police found it on Lowell Street.

Melody Nieves, of 31 Calumet Road, was identified as the driver. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, drinking alcohol from an open container in a vehicle and driving without a license.

Officers found a bottle of rum and a prescription bottle of Depakote in the car, Haggar said. According to the Drugs.com Web site, Depakote is a drug used to treat migraine headaches, bipolar and seizure disorders. Warnings about the drug tell the user not to drink alcohol while taking Depakote.

Nieves told police she had just left a cookout. Her children — ages 3, 5 and 9 — were released to their grandmother.

Haggar said police filed a 51A report of abuse or neglect with the state Department of Social Services, as required by state law.
