A convicted child rapist, who fled to the Dominican Republic, was captured Tuesday at the home of a relative in Santa Domingo.
German Reyes, formerly of Lawrence and Methuen, was convicted of raping and assaulting his daughter in 1998 and 1999 while she was 11 and 12 years old and then again from 2003 to 2004. Reyes was arrested on April 15, 2005, and the case went to trial. The day before closing arguments, Oct. 23, 2006, Reyes posted $25,000 bail and fled the country.
The jury convicted him in abstentia of rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He also was convicted of three counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or under and incest.
The Massachusetts State Police violent fugitive apprehension section tracked him to New York City where they learned he had flown to the Dominican Republic. Local authorities worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the capture of Reyes.
"This criminal may have thought he escaped justice, but he thought wrong," said Col. Mark Delaney, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, in a statement. "This truly was a cooperative effort that spanned not only different agencies, but different countries."
Reyes will be sentenced for his crimes when he is returned to Lawrence. He is being held in the Dominican Republic pending extradition.
