Doctor: Burned Fla. teen 'not out of woods yet'

MIAMI (AP) — A Miami doctor says a 15-year-old badly burned after other teens doused him with a flammable liquid and set him on fire is doing as well as can be expected.

Dr. Nicholas Namias with Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center said Wednesday that the injuries Michael Brewer suffered were among the worst and the teen is not "out of the woods yet."

Brewer was hospitalized with burns over three-quarters of his body after the attack at a Deerfield Beach apartment complex Monday afternoon. Five teenagers have been charged with aggravated battery. Police say it happened after he stopped someone from stealing his father's bike.

Namias says Brewer's face is not badly burned, but the teen is at risk of infection and could experience organ failure in the coming months.
