Kiwanians cleanup to honor war hero
ANDOVER — On Saturday, the Greater Lawrence Kiwanis Club will clean up around the George L. Street Memorial Bridge, named for the town's most decorated naval officer.
The cleanup also coincides with Veterans Day, which will be observed on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Street served in the Navy for 29 years, and was awarded the Medal of Honor, while commanding the submarine USS Tirante in World War II.
His Pacific exploits inspired the 1958 movie "Run Silent, Run Deep," starring Clark Gable. Street lived in Andover for 30 years. He was 86 when he died in 2000.
The bridge, honoring him, crosses over Interstate 495 on Greenwood Road.
On Saturday, Kiwanians and their families will cut grass, pulled weeds and swept the sidewalks.
It will be the second time the club conducts the bridge clean up.
