Covet the exuberance of a canine's love

Ask Dog Lady

Dear Dog Lady,

As long as we've had our 4-year-old mutt (we got her at the pound when she was 5-months-old), she always cries when my wife and I come home from work or from a 10-minute outing. She greets us like we've been gone for days. Why does she do this?

— Mike

Dear Mike,

Get used to it. You and your wife are the Alpha and Omega for this dear dog. You're all she knows - or wants to know.

However, you are not alone. Most dogs greet their cherished human guardians with unrestrained exuberance and irrational joy - as if the beloved humans were returning from a round-the-world trek by way of Outer Mongolia. Dog Lady can leave her dog for the time it takes to put the car in the garage and the terrier welcomes her back with such tail-wagging enthusiasm as befits a side of beef.

Dogs are ridiculous. Their unconditional love is constant and enduring, despite all odds and impediments. No wonder they are so endearing. Your 4-year-old mutt deserves your considerate tender care. She can't help herself - even if she could.

Dear Dog Lady,

I have a 14-year-old yellow Labrador that I can't take care of due to work and travel schedules. He is in the kennel on a weekly basis anywhere from three to 10 days. Even though it is a good kennel, I hate to keep leaving him there (let alone the cost!). My father used to take care of him for me but he has since passed and there is no one else available. Any thoughts on a new home for him?

— Scott

Dear Scott,

Every breed has a rescue group devoted to dogs. Surely, the Labrador group would be eager to help with resettlement of your aged dog. Many people, who adopt dogs with responsible thoughtfulness, choose older dogs that are trained and human-cozy. Google "Labrador Retriever rescue" and "nearest no-kill animal shelter." Both of these resources can help find a new home for your aged yellow Lab.

Sure, you're busy but don't be too busy to find your venerable dog a new home. Forget Craigslist. Dog Lady can't read the Craigslist pet section without tearing up. If you want to post your Lab's picture, utilize Petfinder. Many shelters and rescue groups also use this Web resource. Do the right thing for your dear elderly dog. He gave you (and your late father) many years. Now, apply all your energy and resources in resettling him comfortably.
