The board of directors of the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company recently adopted a resolution urging Congress to create legislation to address climate change issues and to incorporate 11 principles in any new policy designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. MMWEC is based in Ludlow, Mass., but has member municipal electric companies from throughout the Merrimack Valley and across the North Shore.
The resolution recognizes that "emission of greenhouse gases, primarily from the combustion of fossil fuels, and the linkage of those emissions to global climate change, is the most significant environmental policy issue confronting the nation."
MMWEC is applying the resolution's principles as it participates in the development of Massachusetts regulations for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a coalition of 10 Northeastern states, which is seeking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and other sources.
MMWEC is a nonprofit, public corporation and political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that provides a variety of power supply, financial and other services to the state's consumer-owned, municipal utilities.
