NORTH ANDOVER — Through its Charitable Foundation, Stoneham Savings Bank has pledged $15,000 to the Stone Zoo's Black Bear Exhibit campaign fund. The contribution will be paid over three annual installments. The exhibit which is the new home to two adolescent black bears from Tennessee, named Smokey and Buba, will be opened year-round.

NORTH ANDOVER — Paul Roy, president of Elliot Whittier Insurance, and Cindy Traverso, managing member of MTM Insurance Associates LLC, announce the formation of Elliot Whittier-MTM Insurance Associates LLC. The new organization leverages the resources of two agencies to give both entities access to each other's insurance markets. "The new alliance increases our access to companies by 50 percent, Roy reported, making us even more competitive in both personal and commercial business." METHUEN — Jose Cruz, business development manager of TD Banknorth in Methuen, has been named Rotarian of the Year by the Methuen-Salem Rotary Club. This award is presented annually. The recipient is selected by club members based on his or her service to the club, the community, and Rotary International.

In addition to serving as the public relations chairperson, Cruz provides assistance to local service projects such as the Club's annual Charity Golf Tournament, holiday food basket drive, and cooking and serving food to athletes and their families at the Special Olympics event the club sponsors annually at Salem (N.H.) High School.

Cruz is also a member of the Methuen Board of Trade. He resides in Salem, N.H., with his wife, Grace, and daughter, Kelsey.

SALEM, N.H. — The Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce will hold the Second Annual Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Oct. 4. This year's event will focus on "Family Health," and is being coordinated with the help of the Salem School District's Woodbury PTA. The event will feature "expo style" vendor displays, product demonstrations, tips for family health, an interactive "Fun Zone" for Children of all ages sponsored by Best Buy of Salem, as well as a cooking demonstration by Tommy Grella Jr., of The Next Food Network Star fame.

Booths are now available for vendors wishing to participate in this event. The booths include table, table coverings, skirt, backdrop "pipe & drape" and side rails, and two chairs. The event will be held at Woodbury Middle School in Salem from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and will include activities for children of all ages, demonstrations and free giveaways, as well as raffles throughout the day. HAVERHILL — The Duxbury Board of Selectmen and Town Manager Richard MacDonald have agreed on a new three-year contract. MacDonald, a Haverhill resident, has been town manager in Duxbury for the past three years.

Duxbury, a community of 15,000 people, was recently rated AAA by Standard and Poor, one of only 12 communities in Massachusetts with the highest financial rating offered by the rating agency.

SALISBURY BEACH — Shihan Larry F. Giordano, chief instructor of Giordano Family MKA, hosted the annual summer beach training at Salisbury Beach Reservation on June 3. More than 100 students attended, along with 20 Black Belts. MKA Beach training is open to all staff and students.

Mas Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Karate, set the precedence for beach training with his students, including Shihan Giordano. A favorite among MKA students, beach training offers unique training conditions to test each individual's capacity for balance, mental endurance and strength conditioning. MKA's Beach training included a brisk run, karate basics and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

"This training program is vitally important to the development of our students at MKA, and this year we had many younger students attend," Shihan Larry Giordano said. "The beach conditions push each student's mental and physical endurance, making it a challenging, yet rewarding experience. The students appreciate the variation in our training program, and look forward to our annual event."

ANDOVER — Helium Inc. in Andover has added three industry veterans to its team. Peter Newton, who most recently served as Monster.com's senior vice president and GM of Monster's media alliances, has been named Helium's vice president of business development. Joining the Helium Board of Directors is former president of Monster Steven Pogorzelski, and joining the Helium Board of Advisors is former executive vice president of the Boston Globe Alfred S. Larkin Jr.

Newton will focus on driving partnerships and strategic relationships with media companies, including newspapers, worldwide. Newton acquired more than 200 partners during his tenure at Monster.com. As Monster's senior vice president/GM, he was responsible for growing the company's small- and medium-sized business (SMB) segment. A longtime newspaper industry veteran, he spent 18 years with The Boston Globe, where he served as vice president of advertising.

Pogorzelski spent more than a decade in various executive roles at Monster where he was responsible for sales and customer development in more than 40 countries worldwide. Pogorzelski has 23 years of recruitment and advertising agency experience.

Larkin recently served as executive vice president of The Boston Globe. During his 36-year tenure there, he served as vice president and assistant to the publisher, and has held a variety of positions including political reporter, Sunday Magazine editor, assistant managing editor for local news, and Sunday managing editor.

LAWRENCE — Metro Credit Union will collect supplies for its School Supply Drive through Aug. 30, at its Lawrence branch, 215 South Broadway. Donations of backpacks, pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons and any other new school supplies are needed. Metro will distribute the supplies to local school districts for children in need before the school year starts.
