ATLANTA, Ga. - The Eagle-Tribune has been honored by a publishers organization as the best print quality newspaper in the country for papers between 50,000 and 150,000 daily circulation.
The award was announced last week at the 104th annual convention of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
Contest judges cited The Eagle-Tribune for its high-quality black-and-white and color reproduction, and for its overall print appearance that makes the paper easier for readers to read.
"Our press crew takes great pride in the quality of their work and the meticulous maintenance of our 39-year-old press," said Jim Falzone, the paper's director of production, who submitted the newspaper's entry. "Our prepress and postpress departments share this commitment to quality and help consistently produce award-winning newspapers."
Twelve newspaper and print quality experts judged the newspapers. Kevin Conner, quality assurance manager of the Washington Post, served as chairman of the judging committee.
"Our production facility has placed in five out of the last six print quality contests we have entered," Falzone said. "This SNPA award is especially rewarding because we won first place against some of the country's top newspapers in our circulation category."
The SNPA print quality contest is open to newspapers throughout the country that are owned by groups with membership in the organization. More than 65 newspapers participated in this year's competition. The Fort Myers, Fla., News-Press won second-place honors in the Eagle-Tribune's category, and the Portland Oregonian captured the top award in the big metro papers category.
The Eagle-Tribune presses in North Andover print The Salem News, The Gloucester Daily Times, The Daily News of Newburyport, the Carriage Towne News, the Haverhill Gazette, the Andover Townsman, Town Crossings and the Derry News.
