Tell us: How is the economy affecting you?

As bad economic news continues to mount, some experts say we are either in a recession or hurtling toward one. For many people, it's a technical question, since they are cutting back on their budgets already due to high gasoline and home heating oil prices, crippling credit card debt, high mortgages and car payments, and the rising cost of all kinds of food and other necessities.

Auto Scanner: Use panel to block sun, keep car cool

Q: I have a 2000 Mercury Sable wagon with 75,000 miles on it. For several years now, on hot days if the car is parked in the sun I have a problem with my air conditioner. Generally the AC works fine, but after sitting in the sun, when I get into the car and start it up , the AC will work for less than a minute and then it will blow very hot air, and short out the radio and clock. The unit that houses the AC/heat control is one panel that also houses the radio/CD/tape and clock. When the AC is not working, that whole panel shuts off, meaning I have no radio, no clock and I cannot control the fan or turn off the hot air blowing out at the maximum fan speed. Once the car is parked in a cooler spot and it has cooled down, the AC is fine. The dealer has replaced the panel that houses the AC, radio twice and also replaced sensors for the AC, but over $1,000 later, it still happens sporadically. If I use the auto setting for the climate control the AC works fine and I don't have this issue at all.

Help Desk: Going digital has never been easier

Summertime and, as the song says, the living is easy. Here are a few suggestions for making it easier:
Digital cameras continue to gain features and drop in price. Happily the state of the art has reached the point where the megapixel race is now pretty much a dead issue. Megapixels are a measure of how many digital sensor elements a camera has (a digital picture being a collection of electronic "dots.")

Dave Says: Consolidation loans not the answer; co-signing loans the problem

Dear Dave: My uncle's wife died last year. An attorney handled probate for him, but I don't think it was an estate attorney. He doesn't know if she had life insurance, and now he's left with medical bills totaling about $8,000. There are also credit card bills of $11,000. The house is paid off, but he wants to get a loan and consolidate the bills. He currently receives about $3,000 a month income between pension and social security, and he's a little confused about financial matters. What can we do?
