May 09, 2008 12:32 pm Parkland Medical Center offers free skin cancer screenings Parkland Medical Center, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will host free skin cancer screenings at the Oncology-Hematology Clinic, Suite 209, in the Nutfield Professional Building on the hospital's campus at 44 Birch St., Derry, N.H. The screenings will be Thursday, May 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, May 21, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Skin cancer affects more than 1 million Americans every year. The American Cancer Society recommends a skin examination by a physician every three years for individuals between the ages of 20 and 40, and annually for those 40 and older. Appointments can be scheduled in advance by calling 603-421-2130. Raffle to benefit melanoma foundation Tickets are available for the Melanoma Education Foundation's eighth annual Calendar Raffle to support skin cancer teacher training and help bring related materials to students in New England schools. Each ticket enters 31 drawings starting July 1. Prizes include overnights at the Sheraton Boston and Hotel Lenox, gift cards up to $150 each at gourmet restaurants, among others. Tickets are $5 each, three for $10, or seven for $20, and are tax-deductible. To order by mail, send check or money order to MEF Calendar Raffle, P.O. Box 2023, Peabody, MA 01960. The foundation also needs volunteers to help with raffle sales, both on-site and off-site, and with other special events. On-site sales will take place at suburban locations north and west of Boston on Fridays and Saturdays from May 23 to June 28. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will work in pairs. The foundation provides one-hour on-site or video training to high school and middle school health educators at no cost. Fitness Together-North Andover celebrates Women's Health Week Fitness Together-North Andover will have an open house to celebrate Women's Health Week on Saturday, May 17, from 1 to 5 p.m. at 73 Main St., North Andover. The open house will be a chance to meet the professional certified trainers at the center, which offers services including one-on-one training, weight loss plans, and nutrition. A HeartScreen America representative also will be available to answer questions and register people for an upcoming Heart Screening Event at the facility May 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The screenings are open to people from the North Andover community ages 6 and older. Pre-registration for the screenings is required by May 28.
