Jump, jive and wail

Rico Barr and the Jump 'n' Jive Review — the area's premier swing and party band — will play at The Mall at Salisbury Beach, on Friday, Aug. 1, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. Although the band was nominated as swing band of the year by the national swing awards, their repertoire includes much more. They perform the history of dance music, classic rock and pop from the jazz and rock decades, as well as Latin and ballroom. For more information, visit www.ricobarr.com.

Rhythm is gonna get ya

For more Latin music, check out the final performance of the Tito Puente Latin Music Series. This Thursday's featured artist is Eguie Castrillo, timbale and conga player, who performs with his orchestra..Castrillo, a Berklee professor and native of San Juan, is an authority on the rhythms of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago.. He has performed or recorded with such artists as Arturo Sandoval, Steve Winwood and Jennifer Lopez.. His 18-piece group includes horns, congas, bongos and lots of energy..The free outdoor concert starts at 7 p.m., at O'Day Park, 85 West Newton St., in Boston's South End.

A headbanger's ball

Cinderella and Warrant top the ticket Thursday, July 31, at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 8. The show is for ages 18 and over. 'West Side Story' comes to Merrimack

The children's theater group, the Summer Theatre Ensemble, will perform Lawrence native Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Rogers Center for the Arts, Merrimack College, 315 Turnpike St., North Andover. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students. Call 978-273-1054.

Learn about the Maasai

Patrick Papatiti, the vibrant young leader of the Maasai people in Southern Kenya, will speak about the beauty of the traditional ways of the Maasai, and the struggle to preserve them in the face of the pressures of the modern world. Meet him Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Jabberwocky Book Shop, 50 Water St., Tannery Mill No. 1, Newburyport. This will be a fascinating program, a unique opportunity to learn about another culture and a vanishing way of life for both children and adults, and it is free and open for all.
