Seeing this movie is no vacation

"Mr. Bean's Holiday"

1 star

Isn't it fun when the entire premise of a film is summed up in the trailer? Well, "Mr. Bean's Holiday" takes it to a whole new extreme, and reveals the entire plot within the title of the film itself. That's right, Mr. Bean goes on holiday. Who would've guessed?

In this 90-minute travel disaster, Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) wins a raffle and receives a trip to Cannes, France. Along the way he experiences one fatuous blunder after the next, with "hilarious" results. Yeah right; that could be farther from the truth.

Mr. Bean is a dim-witted fool who mumbles and mutters his way through the scenes. This lack of dialogue forces Atkinson to rely solely on physical comedy, most of which falls flat. The only scene I found remotely funny was when Bean has to act as a street performer to earn money. Other than that, I barely even cracked a smile.

So what is so special about this character that Atkinson has portrayed since the early '90s, starting off with a TV series and moving to film? I haven't got the slightest idea. His character is annoying and made me feel dumb just by watching.

Also, what's with his lack of speech? Even though it's not explained, I wonder if producers are trying to make Bean look as though he has a mental condition. If that is true, then this movie would be an entirely tasteless and offensive piece of manure.

So in conclusion, I feel the deepest sympathy for anyone who forks over 10 bucks to see this humorless flick.

I saw the movie for free. This is very good, because if I had paid to see "Mr. Bean's Holiday," I might have ended up suing the movie theater - for pain and suffering.
