Methuen City Council delays leadership vote

METHUEN — The City Council agreed to delay electing a chairman and vice chairman last night.

The council typically elects its leaders at its first meeting of the year. Councilor Larry Giordano is in the Dominican Republic on a Christian mission, and councilors have said they want to wait to vote until he returns.

The council's next meet is on Jan. 20. Councilors Deborah Quinn, John Cronin Jr. and Stephen Zanni have all said during interviews that they want to be chair. Giordano and Councilor Jennifer Kannan have said they would like to be vice chair.

Christmas tree recycling begins in North Andover

NORTH ANDOVER — The holidays are over and Christmas tree recycling is underway.

The Public Works Department will pick up discarded Christmas trees from curbs now through Jan. 16.

People are asked to remove all lights, decorations and tinsel before putting the tree out with the trash.

Trees will be chipped at the curb.

Support for those with family in the military

The Merrimack Valley Military Family Support group is looking for new members.

Meetings are at 7 p.m., on the second Thursday of each month at 10 Reed St. in Haverhill.

The group shares information, support and concerns for those who have loved ones in the military. All new members receive a blue star service banner with an information and resource packet. Details, call 978-688-9525.

Temple, Red Cross team up for blood drive

ANDOVER — Temple Emanuel is sponsoring a community blood drive Jan. 13, from 2 to 7 p.m., for the American Red Cross. The synagogue is at 7 Haggetts Pond Road.

Donors are asked to call 1-800-448-3543 to make an appointment. Pizza and homemade baked items will be served.

Knights hosts dinner-dance

ANDOVER — Members of the Andover Knights of Columbus are hosting a dinner dance Jan. 24, from 6:30 to 11 p.m., at Angelica's on Route 114 in Middleton.

Guests will dance to a live band and there also will be a silent auction and door prizes. Tickets are $35.

Soup kitchen seeks volunteers

LAWRENCE — Cor Unum meal center, a ministry of St. Patrick Parish, is having volunteer orientation Jan. 17 at 11 a.m.

The center serves breakfast and dinner daily. Time commitment is flexible and there are many opportunities available.
