BOSTON — Darcy Cardarelli, a prominent Haverhill citizen, will spend six months in prison or under home confinement for income tax violations, according to a sentence today in U.S. District Court. She was also ordered to pay restitution of $1.2 million.

Jeanne Kempthorne, Cardarelli's lawyer, said she will report to federal authorities in four weeks. It "is up to the Federal Bureau of Prisons" where Cardarelli will serve her sentence, Kempthorne said. It is possible she may be confined to her home, Kempthorne said.

Cardarelli, 52, of 63 Ledge Road pleaded guilty in October to four counts of causing the failure to file income tax returns for the years 2002 to 2005. Cardarelli handled the financial affairs for her and her husband, Dr. Joseph Cardarelli, a successful orthodontist in Haverhill, including assisting in the preparation of their individual tax returns and working with an accountant to prepare joint tax returns for 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The government said the gross income of Cardarelli's husband during those years was between $800,000 and $1.3 million per year.

Federal guidelines call for as many as 30 to 37 months of confinement for this level of offense, Kempthorne said.

Wednesday's edition of The Eagle-Tribune will contain a complete report.
