ANDOVER — Four students here won honorable mentions in a state bookmark contest through the Massachusetts School Library Association.

The association holds a bookmark contest every year. This year's theme was "School Libraries: The Heart of Our Schools."

The Andover winners are: Brigid Misage, a kindergartener at the Shawsheen School; Emai Lai, a third-grader from the Bancroft School; and Sierra Jamira and Nicole Ericson, sixth-graders from West Middle School.

The students and their librarians will attend an awards ceremony at the Statehouse April 2. To see all the winning entries, people can log onto www.maschoolibraries.org.

Taking a turn on the catwalk

LAWRENCE — Students and teachers at Central Catholic High School are ready to strut their stuff in a fashion show, April 5, to help cancer research.

The show starts at 7 p.m. in the school's Memorial Gymnasium.

Students and teachers will be walking down a 52-foot runway — constructed exclusively for this event — modeling men's and women's contemporary-casual sportswear from the spring and summer collections. There will be a formal wear segment as well.

Boutiques donating their time and materials are Indra Salon, First Date, Native Sun, GiGi's of Andover, Cristina's Bridal, Stitch's Boutique, Black Tie at Kaps, KAPS Menswear, Dresscode and IZZY's.

Dancers from Nancy Chippendale's Dance Studios in North Andover will perform during the fashion show.

Tickets are $10 and may be reserved by e-mailing catwalkforcancer@yahoo.com. Include your full name, the number of tickets you would like, your e-mail address and phone number where you can be reached.

The evening includes several door prizes, including a $50 gift certificate to Daher's shoes, a $50 gift card to Stitch's Boutique, a deep-tissue massage at Elizabeth Grady and an eight-week salsa dancing course at Nancy Chippendale's.

Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, Massachusetts Affiliate.

Would you like an iPod with your fries?

METHUEN — Students could get more than a mouthful if they buy school lunch. They could also get an earful — of music, that is.

The staff in the Food Service Department are giving away Apple iPods on designated days. Students who buy lunch on those days are automatically entered into the running to win an iPod, Food Service Supervisor Wayne Vespa recently announced. The giveaway will take place at all of the grammar schools, for each grade level.

High school students also have something to look forward to. Starting next month, the Food Service Department will begin a promotion with Nintendo Wii.

"I feel that this is a great way to reward the children of Methuen for patronizing the program all year long," Vespa said in a statement to school officials.

Info on North Andover kindergarten

NORTH ANDOVER — Parents with children entering kindergarten can attend an informational meeting and register on Tuesday, March 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the North Andover Middle School Auditorium.
