LAWRENCE — The Lawrence Rotary Club is looking for some great teachers. The group is now seeking nominations for its annual Teacher of the Year award. The winning teacher will be announced at a May 8 banquet. The recipient receives a $1,000 award and the traditional Crystal Apple award. A $1,000 prize will also be given to the teacher's school. There's also a new award this year, the Rising Star, which recognizes the teacher who meets the same standards, but has only taught in Lawrence for five years or less. The Teacher of the Year award has been granted for the past 10 years to an exemplary teacher in Lawrence. The competition is open to every teacher in every Lawrence school, including public, private, parochial, special and higher education. All nominations are due by April 17. This year's judges are David Hartleb, Northern Essex Community College president; Gary McCloskey, Merrimack College dean; and Howard Allen, director of operations for the business resource center at Cambridge College in Lawrence. The May 8 award ceremony will be at DiBurro's Function Facility in Haverhill. Joan Gurry, director of the Graduate Institute for Teachers at Merrimack College, will be the keynote speaker. "Teach like your heart's on fire," will be the theme of her presentation. Nominations and ticket purchases can be made at www.lawrencerotary.org. ><p>
