Lawrence man accused of beating wife on leave from Army to remain in jail

LAWRENCE — A decision to change lawyers will cost Gabriel Tellez another 34 days in jail.

Arrested over the weekend and charged with beating his wife and tying her to the bed Saturday night, Tellez, 20, of 48 Cedar St., Apt. 1, was arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court.

He was ordered held without bail pending a hearing to determine whether he poses a danger to the community and should remain in jail pending his trial.

The hearing was scheduled for yesterday. Because Tellez opted to change lawyers, Judge Thomas Brennan ordered him held until April 30, when the dangerousness hearing will be held.

Tellez's wife, a 20-year-old soldier, was home on a weekend pass from Fort Drum, N.Y., when the couple got into an argument as they returned from a video rental store.

According to police reports, when the couple returned to their apartment, Tellez dragged his wife out of the car, and they continued to fight once they were inside the apartment.

The victim told police she decided to go to bed but that Tellez stayed up and began drinking, police said.

Later he confronted his wife and punched her in the face several times, knocking her down on the bed, police said.

Police said Tellez, using cable cords bound his wife to the bed, and then fell asleep on the bedroom floor.

The victim was able to escape and flee to her parents' home.

She was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and treated for injuries suffered in the attack, police said.
