METHUEN — Three police officers who helped two brothers involved in an accident at a school last summer will be honored by a statewide police association this month.

Patrolmen Steven Hatem, Michael Farelli and Eric Deleon will be honored April 26, during the Massachusetts Hispanic Law Enforcement Association's annual dinner.

The three officers responded to Tenney Grammar School last Labor Day weekend when a 1,200-pound steel gate fell on two brothers who were playing outside the school. Timothy DiLeo, 11, died in the accident. His brother Andrew, 8, survived.

The association is the first group to recognize the men for their efforts that day, said Hemenigildo Martinez Jr., the group's president and founder.

"Unfortunately, there was the loss of one life, but one life was saved," Martinez said.

The dinner is at the Elks Lodge #65, 652 Andover St., Lawrence.

The keynote speaker will be Boston police Deputy Superintendent Rafael Ruiz. Entertainment will be provided by the Latin band Alexander.

After a 6:30 p.m. cocktail reception, dinner will be served at 7. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 978-852-3164.
