NORTH ANDOVER — Police closed Waverly Road at the tail end of the morning commute yesterday because a construction crew broke a gas line, said Lt. John Carney.

The crew from G&R Construction is doing water main work for the town and accidentally broke open a gas line while digging at the corner of Waverly and Margate Road, causing a gas leak about 9:10 a.m., Carney said.

"We had an officer on the scene working the (detail) job. He was able to get the Fire Department and the gas company notified through our dispatch right away," Carney said.

Police closed the road from Greene Street, which is north of the accident site, to Wood Ridge Drive.

"And Bay State Gas responded right away and shut the gas off," Carney said. "They're making the repairs as we speak."

Police reopened the road at 9:45 a.m.

Nobody was injured and nobody had to be evacuated from their home, Carney said.
