METHUEN — A 19-year-old man was arrested after he dumped a stolen bicycle and tried to run from police.

Sgt. James Gunter said Officer Walter Fleming was flagged down on Milk Street about 5:30 p.m. Thursday by a boy who reported his bicycle had just been stolen.

Fleming had just seen a man in a white T-shirt pedal by him, heading toward East Street and a boy chasing him, Gunter said.

Officer James Moore, who also was in the area, saw the man dump the bicycle on Hickory Lane and run, Gunter said.

Joseph Rios, 19, of 73 Tenney St., was arrested and charged with larceny over $250, Gunter said.

The bicycle, a black, specialized BMX-style bicycle valued at $250, was returned to its owner.

SUV window smashed

HAVERHILL — The rear liftgate window of a sport utility vehicle was smashed while parked in a Fairview Farm Road driveway, police said.

The resident told police nothing appeared to be missing nor did it look as though his property had been rifled through. The SUV belonged to the resident's employer, police said.

The man went to bed about 8:30 p.m. and discovered the damage when he went out to the SUV about 6 a.m. Thursday, police said.
