Methuen apartment was stash house, police say

By Jim Patten
Staff Writer

LAWRENCE — The Methuen apartment where detectives seized a large quantity of cocaine and cash had none of the amenities associated with normal, everyday living, prompting police to conclude it was used as a "stash house" for the drugs.

Testifying yesterday in the Superior Court trial of Angel Ayala Roque, 46, of 50 Glen Ave., Methuen, state Trooper Brian O'Neil told the court that when he entered the apartment to serve the search warrant that turned up 30 2.2 pound bricks of cocaine, he saw no clothing, personal care products, no kitchen table or utensils or plates, no piles of dirty laundry or anything that might indicate someone lived there.

He said investigators did find the 30 bricks of cocaine that were coated with red engine grease and re-wrapped.

Questioned by prosecutor Michael Hickey, O'Neil testified the packages had been re-wrapped so they could be handled while avoiding contact with the grease.

The grease, between layers of wrapping, served to mask the odor of the cocaine to avoid detection.

Under cross examination from defense lawyer John Cicilline, O'Neil said he did not write any reports on the investigation or the processing of the evidence because all of that was done by officers from the Lawrence Police Department.

Roque is on trial before Judge John Lu on two counts of distribution of cocaine over 200 grams and one count of conspiracy to violate drug laws.

A codefendant in the case, Nicole Paquette, 32, of Haverhill was sentenced in February to 15 years in prison after being convicted on one count of distribution of cocaine over 200 grams and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Police arrested Paquette and Roque on Sept. 12, 2006, after a minivan was dropped off at a Lawrence car rental agency. When employees checked the minivan, they found two boxes with 21 bricks of cocaine in storage compartments. The boxes were addressed to Leo's Pub, 567 Essex St. in Lawrence, where Roque was a manager.

The combined street sale value of the cocaine taken from the minivan and apartment was estimated to exceed $3 million, police said.

At the conclusion of testimony yesterday, Lu told jurors they would likely receive the case for deliberation on Monday and to plan to spend the full day at court.

Testimony in the case has been heard from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the past week.
