Lawrence's budding carpenters take home trophy

METHUEN — Young adults from the Merrimack Valley won the 12th annual YouthBuild Carpentry Challenge at The Home Depot yesterday.

Ten YouthBuild teams competed, building wood frame walls with plywood, sheeting and drywall. Contestants were judged in a timed contest of speed, skill, quality, teamwork and safety.

Lawrence won the competition. Brockton took second place, followed by Fall River in third place.

YouthBuild is a national program, training young people in leadership, GED and construction skills. Each program builds affordable housing in their local community. The Lawrence team consists of people from the Merrimack Valley, who range in age from 18 to 24.

Some of the other teams in the competition were from Lowell, Springfield, Holyoke, Quincy and Hartford, Conn. All materials used in the competition will be recycled into affordable housing projects, such as the home being constructed by YouthBuild Lawrence students.
