Exotic cats under quarantine at shelter in Methuen

METHUEN — The 51 exotic cats and kittens surrendered to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm are now under quarantine and not available for adoption, a shelter spokeswoman said yesterday.

"They have all been exposed to upper respiratory infection and some have ringworm," she said. "Hopefully, they will be available soon."

She said many people have filled out adoption applications for the cats and kittens.

"We have more people that want them than we have pets," she said.

The breeds of the cats and kittens include ragdoll, sphynx, Devon rex, Himalayan, munchkins and Siamese.

Shelter officials said foster homes are needed for other cats and kittens at the shelter, and persons who can care for an animal on a temporary basis are encouraged to ask for a foster care application.

The shelter is in urgent need of money to help defray the costs of care for the cats and for other animals being cared for there, officials said.

Every penny contributed to the Angels for Animals fund will help provide urgent medical care.
