LAWRENCE — A 26-year-old man drove away from a police sergeant who stopped him yesterday, sparking a chase.

Jayson Ayala, who had warrants out for his arrest, sped away after Sgt. Gene Hatem stopped him for running a red light on Andover Street around 2 p.m., according to Hatem's report.

Ayala followed Andover Street to Interstate 93, which he took to Exit 2 in Salem, only to be greeted by Salem and New Hampshire state police officers when he got off the highway. Ayala stopped on Route 97.

Ayala allegedly forced a man to jump out of the way while fleeing in Lawrence, and he faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, operating to endanger, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of an accident and running a red light. Salem police also charged him with being a fugitive from justice.
