HAVERHILL — A high-speed State Police car chase that started on Interstate-495 in Amesbury ended with the arrests of two men on Central Street last night at about midnight.

State Police Trooper Shane Pierce was traveling south on I-495 about 11:10 p.m. when a black Monte Carlo allegedly stolen from Plaistow, N.H., passed him going over 100 mph.

Pierce activated his blue lights in Haverhill, but the car sped off the highway at the Route 110 exit, and headed south into the city.

Pierce followed the vehicle, with the chase ranging in speeds from 55 to 85 mph, before he called off the chase at the Route 110/Washington Street intersection, said State Police spokesman Lt. David Wilson.

Haverhill Deputy Police Chief Donald Thompson said local police spotted the car on River Street and also on Washington Street but quickly lost site of it.

The car was soon found in front of 11 Central St. and Haverhill Police responding to the scene discovered two men walking nearby.

State Police were called in with a K-9 unit in case a search was needed. The two men, both 23, were arrested at the scene.

Aldis Sureo, address unknown, was arrested and charged by the State Police with receiving stolen property. He was due to be arraigned today in Haverhill District Court.

Aneudis Mendez, 23, of 26 Grand Ave., Haverhill, was arrested by Haverhill police and charged with disorderly conduct. He is to be summonsed to court to face the charges, according to Wilson.

State Police are investigating whether charges of driving under the influence will be filed against the driver. Wilson said there was no evidence of drugs.
