LAWRENCE — Sixteen eighth-graders each received $500 to help them attend private high schools in the fall.

Each student was awarded the Joseph L'Italien Scholarship during a luncheon at Cedar Crest on Tuesday. The scholarship is named in honor of former Lawrence Exchange Club member Joseph L'Italien.

Students came from Community Day Charter School, Lawrence Family Development Charter School and five public schools — the Guilmette, Bruce, Leonard, Oliver and Wetherbee.

Scholarship winners heading to Notre Dame High School are Yumer Capellan, Fabian Rivera, Fidel Luna, Chelsea Marrero and Gladyliz Contreras.

Those who will attend Central Catholic High School are Chris Vasquez, Celinett Romero, Jason Martinez, Talia Clarke, Gabriella Jimenez, Daniel Mugavero, Fortune Kalala, Manuel Suarez, Adrian Ayala and Henry Rodriguez.

Cecilia Reyes will go to The Governor's Academy in Byfield.
