River cleanup postponed because of rain

Published: June 25, 2009

This Saturday's Trash for Cash scavenger hunt on the Merrimack River in Lowell has been postponed to July 11, because the river is too high from all the rain, said Rocky Morrison, president of the Methuen-based Clean River Project.

The event will still take place around the University of Massachusetts Lowell boathouse off Pawtucket Boulevard in Lowell, but the date has changed to Saturday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Who knew it was going to rain for two weeks straight?" Morrison said.

The Clean River Project is looking for local boaters to participate. It's free to enter, and boaters earn points for the amount of garbage they remove from the river. Winners will receive cash and trophies, Morrison said.

People can register online at cleanriverproject.org, or just show up that day. For information, call Morrison at 978-590-9374. There's a public boat ramp near the event site.
