METHUEN — Brittney Kannan could hardly believe the subject of her first photographs with the new camera she received for her 21st birthday: a 7-foot-tall moose standing in her yard.

Brittney said her mother, Jennifer, saw the towering animal first, as she turned into the driveway of their home on Grandview Road near the Haverhill line Thursday night around 8.

"My little sister and I came running outside and we couldn't believe it," said Brittney, a former star softball player for Central Catholic High School who attends the University of Massachusetts Lowell. "It was huge. Everyone was so excited."

"It stood there eating from a tree for about five minutes," Brittney said of the beast. "We've lived here for 12 years but we never saw a moose before. We told my 6-year-old sister Farrah how lucky she was to see it."
