Elderly drivers involved in 2-car crash in Woburn
WOBURN — Just as state legislators were debating a handful of bills aimed at stemming the rising tide of accidents involving elderly drivers, an 83-year-old man drove his car into another car driven by a 78-year-old woman at the intersection of Russell Street and Old Cambridge Road yesterday afternoon.
The woman, who is from Woburn, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition, according to WBZ TV.
The male driver and his wife were also injured and hospitalized.
Police say the man is going to be charged with negligent operation and the Registry of Motor Vehicles may suspend his license pending the outcome of the charges.
State and Woburn police say the man pulled out of Old Cambridge Road into oncoming traffic on Russell Street when he crashed into the woman's car.
The Woburn woman, meanwhile, was driving along Russell Street and had just driven through a green light when she was hit nearly head-on, WBZ reported.
Rescue workers spent nearly an hour with the Jaws of Life to pull the woman from her vehicle.
