METHUEN — The Methuen Scholarship Foundation is seeking golfers for its first-ever golf tournament and auction, which will tee off at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club on Sunday, Aug. 9.
All proceeds will help Methuen students pay for college.
A shotgun start is at 1:30 p.m.
Costs to play in the 18-hole tournament is $125, or register by July 9 and pay only $115.
Fee includes a golf cart, dinner, prizes and gifts. Individuals and teams are invited to sign up. Prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, and to teams who place first, second and third.
A social will be held in the clubhouse at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, auction and raffles at 6:30 p.m.

Summer film series starts tonight
ANDOVER — "Gran Torino" kicks off the Memorial Library's free summer film series tonight at 7.
The 2008 film was directed by and stars Clint Eastwood.
The film series is sponsored by the Friends of Memorial Hall Library. Refreshments will be provided.
The series also includes, "The Last Picture Show" on July 15; "Waltz With Bashir" on July 22; and "In the Mood for Love" on July 29.

Methuen housing discussion on tap
METHUEN — City officials are inviting the public to discuss the potential for housing in the Mount Carmel-Railroad Street area.
The meeting will take place Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Nevins Memorial Library, 305 Broadway.

Civil Air Patrol gets lift from aeronautics giant
NORTH ANDOVER — The Essex County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, stationed in North Andover, has received a $500 grant from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
The Civil Air Patrol provides emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education to the local community.
The money will go toward communications equipment that cadets can be trained to use.
This is the second donation the patrol has received from AIAA, bringing the total to $1,000.

Engelburg named new Rotary president
LAWRENCE — Mark Engelberg officially became the new president of the Lawrence Rotary Club for the 2009-2010 year on June 25.
Engelberg was inducted by Rotary District Gov. Tom Elliott during the club's weekly meeting. A relatively new Rotarian, Engelberg fast became one of the most energetic and active members of Rotary, taking charge of the annual Chili Fest and Teacher of the Year program.
He also is credited with bringing the club into the 21st century by totally converting it's Web site into a user-friendly communications vehicle. He took responsibility for all IT automation and function, including database management, newsletter distribution and communications, according to a press release.
Hike in Andover this summer
ANDOVER — Experienced hikers on the Andover Trails Committee will lead hikers on the Bay Circuit Trail, 18 miles of which runs through Andover.
Hike starts at 1 p.m. and will be held on July 26, Aug. 23, and Sept. 27.
The Bay Circuit Trail is a 200-mile trail that stretches from Plum Island on the North Shore to Duxbury Bay on the South Shore. Each leg of the hiking series will consist of approximately 4.5 miles.
