More than 200 people braved the rain yesterday for the opening of the Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market.

Local farmers and vendors will be in Andover on Saturday for opening day of the Andover Farmers Market on Main Street.

The Lawrence farmers market will run every Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., until Oct. 28. The market is next to City Hall on Appleton Way, between Essex and Common streets.

This is the Lawrence farmers market's 15th year.

The market offers locally produced fruits, vegetables, eggs, homemade breads, baked goods and more from three area farms: Riverdale Farm in Groton, Boston Hill Farm in North Andover and Brox Farm in Dracut. Prepared foods from the Clock Tower Cafe also will be available this season.

About 230 people turned out yesterday, said Janel Wright, community programs manager for Groundwork Lawrence, which runs the market.

"Despite the rain, to have that many people come through the market and see us open is great," Wright said. "We hope for better weather."

The Andover Farmers Market will be open on Saturdays, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., until Oct. 11. The market is on the grounds of the Andover Historical Society, 97 Main St.

New at the market this season is a fresh seafood vendor and goods from Mann Orchards in Methuen. It also will feature all-natural baked goods, coffee beans, popcorn and frozen dog treats.

The Andover Farmers Market began two years ago.

"It's growing," said Elaine Clements, executive director of the Andover Historical Society. "I think it's the opportunity to buy fresh, local produce. You really have a chance to get to know the farmers themselves. That's great."
