Morley named acting DPW head

LAWRENCE — Michael Morley will serve as director of the Department of Public Works while his boss, Frank McCann, is on medical leave this summer.

Mayor Michael Sullivan named Morley acting director. Morley, a 25-year veteran of public works, has filled in previously when McCann was on vacation, the mayor said. McCann is having surgery this summer.

Morley oversees building maintenance in the city.

"Mike's very qualified," Sullivan said. "He's stepped into this role many times in the past five years."

Sullivan said McCann is expected to be off the job at least six weeks.

Verizon chooses Wetherbee for award

LAWRENCE — The Wetherbee School was one of 15 schools in Massachusetts given a $10,000 award to install Verizon's Thinkfinity.org, an educational portal in the classroom.

One of the program's goals is to create projects to improve student performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test.

Thinkfinity.org offers more than 55,000 educational and literacy resources for teachers, parents and students. They include standards-based, grade-specific K-12 lesson plans and engaging interactive activities provided in partnership with many of the nation's leading educational and literacy organizations.

The Verizon Foundation also gave each school $130,000 to support a partnership to train teachers to use Thinkfinity.org in the classroom through Ford University and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Enjoy barbecue the cowboy way

ANDOVER — The 14th annual Dallas Night at the Andover/North Andover YMCA, 165 Haverhill St., will be July 23.

It starts at 5:30 p.m., and features a family barbecue, western line dancing, pony rides, country music and much more.

Don a hat and boots or come as you are, it makes no difference.

Cost in advance is $10 per person and $35 per family; and $12 per person and $40 per family on the night of the event.

Seating times are: 5:45 p.m.; 6:15 p.m; and 6:45 p.m. For information, call the Andover/North Andover YMCA at 978-685-3541.

Summer program offers academics, trips, games

LAWRENCE — Adelante Inc. is hosting its Summer Success program for students in grades seven to nine.

Summer Success offers a series of activities, including academic enrichment classes, field trips, swimming and indoor and outdoor games.

The session runs July 6 to Aug. 13, Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $45. Parents are required to submit a copy of the child's report card.

Adelante has been serving area youth since 1992, including academics, tutoring, and test preparation for seventh- and eighth-graders. It also provides scholarship assistance and community service opportunities for high-school students.
