Vietnam Memorial awards $2,500 in scholarships

Five recent Methuen and Lawrence high school graduates were each awarded a $500 scholarship for college from the Lawrence Vietnam Memorial.

Money for the scholarships was raised at the 17th annual Lawrence Vietnam Memorial Scholarship cabaret, which was held at the Claddagh Pub in Lawrence in May, said Ed Curran, founder of the Lawrence Vietnam Memorial and former veterans affairs officer in Methuen.

Winners are:

r Philip Abdoo, a Methuen High graduate, who will attend Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. He later plans to attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston.

r Monique Gosselin, a Central Catholic High graduate, who will attend Merrimack College in North Andover. She was captain of the high school volleyball, softball and basketball teams.

r Elizabeth Maccarone, a Methuen High graduate, who will attend St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. She earned high honors all four years in high school, where she played softball with Methuen Junior Division.

r Robert Maldonado, a Lawrence High graduate, who will attend Norwich University in Connecticut. He was active in the JROTC honor guard and Gearheadz robotics team. He took part in the Spicket River cleanup for four years organized by Groundwork Lawrence.

r Miriam Sanchez, a Notre Dame High graduate, who will attend Fairfield University to study psychology. She was class valedictorian, a student ambassador, softball player and active in campus ministry.
