Lawrence police chief nabs wrong-way driver

Staff Writer

LAWRENCE — A New Hampshire man picked the wrong night to drive the wrong way on Route 28.

Police Chief John Romero was driving on South Broadway (Route 28) on Saturday evening when he saw Jeffrey Cambria, 46, of Haverhill, N.H., going the wrong way on the busy street.

Cambria, driving a green Dodge Intrepid, left Store 24 at 208 S. Broadway (Route 28) and was heading south in the northbound lane as oncoming traffic approached, according to Romero's report.

Then, Cambria allegedly turned left and drove right through a red light at South Broadway and Andover Street.

Romero activated his blue lights and siren. Moments later, Cambria was placed under arrest and charged with driving after license revocation, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, driving an uninspected motor vehicle, a number plate violation, failure to drive in marked lanes and failure to stop. He was also wanted on a warrant for illegal possession of heroin.

A marked cruiser was called to bring Cambria to the police station. His car was towed.
