Serviceman charged with drug possession

LAWRENCE — Police found 20 bags of marijuana in the sock of a Navy enlisted man they went to arrest on warrants Wednesday night.

Detectives Brian Burokas and Scott Peloquin and the state police fugitive apprehension team went to an apartment on Howard Street to find Jason Morton, 24, of Fort Belvoir, Va., who is on active duty with the Navy.

Morton was not AWOL at the time, but the team had warrants charging him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and intimidation of a witness.

A man let police into the apartment, where they found Morton in a locked bedroom. Morton was barefoot, and troopers asked if he wanted footwear. When he said 'yes' and one of them picked up his flip-flop sandals and socks off the floor, the trooper felt something inside a sock, looked, and found the 20 small bags of marijuana, police said.

Morton denied selling drugs and said the marijuana was for his personal use. Officers seized $400 cash from Morton's wallet, and charged him with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone.
