July water bills
The Georgetown Water Department would like to remind customers that July water bills have been mailed and the last day for the 10 percent discount is Monday, Aug. 11. If you did not receive your bill, please call the office at 978-352-5750.
Medical transportation for seniors
Through Northern Essex Elder Transport, the Georgetown Council on Aging provides rides for seniors to medical and other necessary appointments. Northern Essex Elder Transport is staffed by volunteer drivers. Though a donation of 40 cents per mile is requested to help support the program, no one will be turned away. A minimum of two days of notice is required. The driver will call those with appointments on the day of travel to finalize details. For more information, call the COA at 978-352-5726.
Friends of the Library news
The Friends of the Georgetown Library have a selection of gently used books for sale during regular library hours. The collection is at the end of the corridor to the left of the circulation desk. Proceeds go toward museum passes and children's programming. Friends collect and recycle for cash inkjet and laser printer cartridges and cell phones, even if they are broken. Book donations are always welcome.
The Friends usually meet at the library the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. New members are welcome; membership applications are available at the circulation desk. Mary Paganelli is president.
COA Information
Located on the town's Web site, www.georgetownma.gov, the Georgetown Council on Aging Web page includes links to recent newsletters plus information on volunteer opportunities, transportation, outreach and health and wellness services. From the Web site, access the COA Web page by selecting the link to town departments, then the link to the COA Web page.
The Georgetown Council on Aging seeks a volunteer to fill a vacancy as an alternate board member. Applications and a description of responsibilities are at the COA office in Town Hall. Return completed applications and cover letters to the Board of Selectmen, 1 Liberty St., Georgetown, MA 01833. For more information, call 978-352-5726.
As an extension of the Council on Aging's Outreach Program, the COA recently established a Friendly Visitor Program. Coordinated by the COA, Friendly Visitors provide homebound elders with one hour of companionship and socialization on a weekly basis. Building a network of support within the community, the Friendly Visitor program links elders to opportunities designed to enhance their well-being. To apply as a friendly visitor, call COA Director Colleen Ranshaw-Fiorello at 978-352-5726. Elders interested in participating in the Friendly Visitor Program may also call the COA office.
Paper recycling fundraiser
Georgetown Middle-High School Key Club is running a paper recycling program as a continuing fundraiser. Any paper, except cardboard and phone books, can be recycled. Drop off paper in the containers at the end of the school's upper driveway after 4 p.m. on weekdays or any time on weekends.
Doll-making group meets Mondays
Creating handcrafted dolls for sick children hospitalized in Massachusetts, a doll-making group meets Mondays at 9:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Socialize and hand-sew basic clothes for hand-crafted dolls. Newcomers of all ages are welcome to join as their schedules permit. License your dog
All 2007 dog licenses are now expired. There are still approximately 300 dogs that are not currently licensed. State law requires all dogs 6 months or older to be licensed. Failure to license could result in a citation. The cost to license in July is $25, and in August the cost will be $35. A current rabies certificate is required to obtain a license.
Water Quality Report
The 2007 Water Quality Report has been mailed to all Georgetown water customers. Copies are available at the Water Department office, 1 Moulton St., Georgetown, and also online at www.georgetownma.gov.
Rotary breakfasts
The Greater Georgetown Rotary meets every Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Rowley Pancake House, Route 133, Rowley. You are invited to be their guest for breakfast and learn how Rotarians serve communities. If attending, call President James Mulligan at 978-352-5734.
Historical House Tour on Sept. 27
The Georgetown Historical Society is sponsoring a Historical House Tour on Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will feature six homes, many of which were built in the 1800s and have been maintained and restored, keeping their historical value. Tickets will be available beginning Aug. 1 for $20 at Sedler's Antiques, Theo's Restaurant, Meader's General Store and Kay's Interiors. Tickets will also be available the day of the tour at the Brocklebank Museum. The event is for ages 10 and up, and all proceeds will benefit the restoration of the museum.
School choice openings
There are still slots available for grades 4, 6, 8, 9 and ten for the 2008-2009 school year. Applications are available online at www.georgetown.k12.ma.us or call the superintendent's office at 978-352-5777. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, July 30.
Mountain Mushers at library July 22

Scholarship donations
The Georgetown Scholarship Committee was able to award several scholarships each year due to the generosity of townspeople. Lately, the town has experienced significant growth but donations have declined. The committee hopes this reminder will encourage donations to continue supporting educational aspirations of the townspeople. Checks made out to town of Georgetown Scholarship Fund can be brought to the tax collector's office. Applications for scholarships and instructions are at the town tax accountant's office.
