Police log: Pair charged in Lawrence gun case

LAWRENCE — Two men were arrested after one of them fired a pistol from a car at Bennington and Fern streets.

Nearly the entire shift of officers on duty about 1:41 a.m. Sunday was sent to the address, where they found the two men and arrested them at gunpoint, police said.

Melvin Rivera, 21, of 2 Joseph Road, Salem, N.H., was standing outside the car when officers arrived. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, illegal possession of ammunition, threatening to commit a crime, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, witness intimidation, carrying a firearm without a license and assault.

Police said Rivera refused to take his hand out of his pocket and when he did, he was holding a pistol, which he threw under a nearby car.

Officers recovered the pistol. a .25-caliber Raven Arms semiautomatic, and several spent shell casings.

David Crespo, 22, of 24 Ashland Ave., Methuen, was charged with possession of marijuana, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Rivera threatened the officers in the booking room at the police station, telling them he was a member of the al-Qaida terrorist group and identified himself as Osama bin Laden.

North Andover

Arrest: William Murphy Jr., 46, of 53 Fernview Ave., disorderly conduct, Main and May streets, 12:09 a.m.

Noise complaint: Water Street, report of gunshots in the area, officer reports it was fireworks, 1:39 a.m.

Car crash: 121 Marblehead St., car into a parked car, no injuries, 10:18 p.m.

Andover

Noise complaint: Essex Street, loud music, officer reports no one home, radio left on accidentally, 2:30 a.m.

Arrest: Alexi Lopez, 29, of 54 Pilling St., Haverhill, driving while under the influence of alcohol, second offense, driving without a license, failure to stop for a police officer, driving without lights, 14 River Road, 3:57 a.m.

Car crash: River Road, car into a guardrail, under investigation, 8:53 p.m.

Theft: Riverside Drive, money taken, 10:16 p.m.

Lawrence

Noise complaint: Brook Street, fireworks in the area, 12:01 a.m.

Arrest: Carlos Aguirre, 33, of 252 E. Haverhill St., disorderly conduct, Common Street, 1:05 a.m.

Arrest: Jose Cuevas, 21, 46 Albion St., disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, Common Street, 1:06 a.m.

Arrest: Carlos Gonzalez, 21, of 55 Trenton St., disorderly conduct, 205 Broadway, 1:54 a.m.
