Laboy seeks new job descriptions for school administrators

LAWRENCE — School Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy has proposed new job descriptions for four administrative positions, calling it a reclassification of current posts.

"These are not brand-new positions and we will not be adding on new layers (to the Lawrence School Department central office)," Laboy said yesterday.

"We will not be impacting the bottom line in any way. It's a system realignment."

The School Committee will have a first reading on the new job descriptions when it meets at 7 p.m. today.

The positions include:

Director of school safety and transportation. Laboy said this position would combine two jobs being performed in an acting capacity by School Safety Manager Kevin Clement.

Special assistant to the superintendent. This would be a reclassification of the position held by Mark Rivera, the superintendent's urban affairs liaison.

Workers' compensation case manager. This would be a revival of a position vacant since former employee benefits manager Frank Bonet went to work at City Hall as personnel director.

Manager of multimedia services. Laboy said this is a reclassified position.

Other than the school safety and transportation job that will pay about $80,000 a year, Laboy said salaries for the other positions would range from about $45,000 to the high $60,000s. Each of the jobs would be one-year, nonunion positions.

"We currently have people working in the system now performing these jobs. But we will post them so people can apply for them as well," Laboy said.

Veteran School Committee member James Vittorioso said he only supports the job description for the workers' compensation case manager | a position he believes could save the School Department "thousands and thousands of dollars."

"I think the job descriptions for these other positions are already in place. So, they're superfluous," Vittorioso said.

"The names are being changed for jobs people already have. He's just playing games. And I don't like games," he said.

Vittorioso does, however, believe that Laboy will have no trouble garnering support from the full committee. If members approve the proposed job descriptions tonight, they would be scheduled for a second and final reading next month.
