LAWRENCE — A homeless man was arrested for allegedly stealing the tip cup containing about $4 from the Dunkin' Donuts on South Union Street.
Thomas Powers, 47, who told police he was homeless, asked for and was given a glass of water by a doughnut shop worker Sunday at 4:55 p.m. He drank the water and left the shop.
A customer told police he saw Powers take the cup with money in it and shove it into his pants.
When Officers John Tully and Timothy Dube arrived at the shop, they said they saw a man detaining the alleged thief.
The man told police he saw Powers taking the cup out of his pants outside the store.
But Powers denied taking the cup, telling police all he had in his pants was his cell phone.
Powers was arrested and charged with larceny under $250 and disorderly conduct.
