Young readers get a big boost from government

LAWRENCE — Today, the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council and Community Teamwork Inc., will receive more than 6.7 million in federal money to promote early childhood education in the Merrimack Valley.

Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and Department of Education representatives will present checks to the organizations, the only two in Massachusetts to receive money for Early Reading First programs. Nationwide, 350 groups applied and 31 were chosen to receive funding .

The presentations will be made at the YMCA, 129 Haverhill St., Methuen at 1 p.m.

Youth hangout reopens

NORTH ANDOVER — The Joseph Hermann Youth Center opens up tomorrow at 9 a.m. after a two-week break.

The center at 33 Johnson St. closed Aug. 18 so staff could get some maintenance and planning done for the new school year.

Register for fall classes at YMCA

METHUEN — The YMCA at 129 Haverhill St., kicks off its fall season with an open house and registration Sept. 9 and 10, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The child-care staff and teachers for both School-Age Child Care, an after-school program, and the Preschool Child Care, a full-day program, will be on hand to meet people and give tours.

The Teen Center will also be open for tours.

New classes for fall include: Beginning Karate (ages 8 to 12); Family Karate; Basketball Skills Clinic (ages 5 to 8); Saturday Fun Club (ages 6 to 10); My Y Time (ages 3 to 5); Sports Medley (ages 5 to 8): Dance (grades five and six); Y Soccer (ages 5 to 8); Head of the Class Home Work Assistance (grades 7 to 12); and Friday Variety Nights for Teens (ages 13 to 18).

Registration may be completed on both nights.
