METHUEN — City officials ordered what they called a commercial kennel to stop selling dogs yesterday.
Neighbors complained of odor and noise from barking dogs at 131 Anderson Drive, where the resident has had a large shed erected with a chain-link fence behind it.
At least nineteen residents signed a petition asking the city to "revoke all licenses, permits and structures being used by" the kennel. They gave the petition to the City Council.
"I don't expect to live next to animals, I expect to live next to people," Lucille Donegan of 19 Somerset St. said at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.
Residents complained about the pooches to city officials, and officials saw Internet advertisements for the sale of dogs from the home. An advertisement on a Web site listed Cherry Hill Kennel's New England Berners as having an address of 131 Anderson Drive, and said they sold Bernese mountain dogs for $1,500.
The resident does not have a license to run a business there, so the city ordered the resident to cease and desist all commercial activity yesterday, Mayor William Manzi said.
The resident has a "multiple dog license," so the resident can keep pets and the shed, but cannot sell anymore dogs, Manzi said.
The three women who answered the door at the home yesterday declined to comment.
