September 05, 2008 02:07 am METHUEN — The MSPCA at Nevins Farm is holding a tack sale this weekend to benefit its Equine Center. New and gently used horse equipment will be sold and children have organized a bake sale, all to raise money for the horses and farm animals. Lisa MacMillen of Derry, N.H., owner of the Mariah B, Farm equine boarding facility, will be selling her line of "equine" soy candles, with a portion of the proceeds going to the center. MacMillen's horse, Mariah B, was one of Nevins Farm's first Equine Ambulance clients more than a decade ago when the animal suffered a traumatic eye injury and needed emergency transport. Mariah B, who recovered and lived a full life, died in July. MacMillen's donation will be her tribute to Mariah. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is at 400 Broadway in Methuen. Say 'goodbye' to summer with concert NORTH ANDOVER — The Recreation Council will hold its last summer concert Sunday. Four Guys in Tuxes will perform from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the field behind North Andover Middle School off Main Street. Citibank will sponsor the event, handing out free popcorn and drinks. People should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Tsongas tours armory today METHUEN — Today, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will join with members of the Massachusetts National Guard for a tour of the armory on Route 110. Tsongas will hear details of the plans to build a new armory at the site, as the present facility is no longer adequate for the Guard's needs. The design for the new building is 90 percent complete and will be ready for construction bids in October. The present armory will not be demolished and is a strong candidate for an adaptive reuse that maintains its historic identity. It may be used as a veterans outreach center or National Guard museum. Tsongas says she intends to use her position on the Armed Services and Budget committees to support these efforts. Raffle raised $14,700 for local causes LAWRENCE — During the Feast of the Three Saints on Labor Day weekend, the St. Alfio Society had an annual raffle fundraiser. Feng Shui in the bedroom NORTH ANDOVER — Do not place a bed directly in line with the door. That is one rule people will learn at the library Tuesday, when certified Feng Shui Master Mary Stewart teaches people how to improve their lives through this ancient Chinese practice. The session runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Library. Stewart will show how to design bedrooms that encourage children to sleep, supportive study areas for children, bedrooms that honor romance and rest and furniture arrangements that will enhance beauty, harmony, creativity and tranquility in the home. The session is sponsored by Holistic Moms Network, a nonprofit support and discussion network based on the North Shore.
