DES issues warning for Phillips Pond

SANDOWN — The state Department of Environmental Services issued a cyanobacteria warning for Phillips Pond.

The warning will remain in effect until further testing shows the levels have diminished.

DES advises lake users to avoid contact with the water in areas experiencing cyanobacteria bloom conditions.

DES also advises pet owners to keep their pets out of any waters that have a surface scum.

Cyanobacteria blooms often form dense surface scum that is bright green or blue-green in color or blooms may cause entire lakes to take on a blue-green hue, according to the DES.

Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that can cause health effects ranging from skin and mucous membrane irritations, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, to liver and central nervous system damage.

Timberlane chemistry laboratory is updated

PLAISTOW — Chemistry students at Timberlane Regional High School have new professional equipment for their new lab — a 3-D projector.

The project will allow students to zero in on molecules and rotate them to study all sides.

The district purchased $5,000 worth of equipment using a grant from the state.

PUC to hold hearing on water company load

ATKINSON — The state Public Utilities Commission held a prehearing conference on Sept. 3 regarding Hampstead Area Water Co.'s request to take out a $1.1 million loan from the state's Revolving Loan Fund.

A second hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. Before then, staff and residents can intervene with questions they would like the water company to answer. Those files must be received by the PUC by Oct. 30.

So far, two residents have chosen to intervene.

At the next hearing, there will be a cross-examination of the company and anyone who filed testimony.

A decision will then be made on whether Hampstead Area Water Co. can accept the loan.

Former Pollard student spruces up school

PLAISTOW — Pollard School students returned to school to a new and improved play area, thanks to former student Chris Negrotti.

For his Eagle Scout project, Negrotti — and some volunteer helpers — repainted the lines on the basketball court and added a four-square game.

He also provided visitors with a brighter first look at the school by repainting the columns and the railings at the front entrance.
