LAWRENCE — The 2008 RiverWalk to benefit Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley steps off Sunday.

The 6K run starts at 10 a.m. from Elder Services offices at 360 Merrimack St. (Building 5), and proceeds along the Merrimack River. The route has been certified by Yankee Timing and is one of only three 6K races in Massachusetts. Medals will be awarded in various age categories.

The 6K walk starts at 10:10 a.m. Awards will be given for team spirit and to the youngest and oldest walkers.

Both races will take place rain or shine. Racers can register at www.esmv.org.

The 19th annual event also will feature clowns, face painting, massages, raffles and free food. Dan Roche, sports anchor at WBZ-TV, will be the guest celebrity.

It is a major fundraiser for Elder Services, which provides in-home and emergency care for thousands of elders in the Merrimack Valley, as well as prescriptions, eyeglasses, fuel assistance, groceries, transportation and more.

Party at Shawsheen

ANDOVER — The Shawsheen Renaissance Committee is hosting a Shawsheen Square party tomorrow with canoe and kayak trips down the river, a yard sale, music and a moonwalk and mini golf for children.

It's part of the group's effort to bring more people into that area of town where routes 28 and 133 intersect. The events are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Bowling Green.

Charity rummage sale slated for Oct. 11

NORTH ANDOVER — First Calvary Baptist Church will host a flea market and rummage sale Oct. 11, to benefit Communities Together. It will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, on the corner of Route 125 and Massachusetts Avenue.

Admission is free and refreshments will be sold. No early birds please.

Anyone with items to donate may drop them off at the church Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items can be arranged for pickup by calling 978-686-4012.

Charter school students tops on MCAS test

LAWRENCE — The Community Day Charter Public School in Lawrence earned great scores in the last round of MCAS testing. The school ranked first statewide in seventh-grade English.

Eighth-graders at the school ranked 10th statewide in math, 15th statewide in science and 22nd out of 462 schools in English, according to Tricia Lederer of the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association.

Sixth-graders at the charter school ranked second statewide in math and 20th among 565 schools statewide in English, Lederer said.

Community Day Charter School is at 73 Prospect St.

Meetings set for open space plan

LAWRENCE — The city is hosting a series of meetings regarding the 2009 open space plan.

The plan is updated every five years to identify the investments Lawrence makes in its parks and open space. The results are submitted to the Massachusetts Division of Conservation Services and the updates help make Lawrence eligible to receive state grants for park and recreation projects.

Meetings will be on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lawrence High cafeteria, North Parish Road, and Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors Center, 1 Jackson St.

Town Yard Sale in the Park tomorrow

ANDOVER — The annual Town Yard Sale in the Park will go off from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, after rain shut it down last weekend. If it rains tomorrow, the yard sale will be moved to Sunday. For information or to register a table, call 978-623-8274.

The Park is at the corner of Bartlet and Chestnut streets.
