Apologetic robber leaves Lawrence bank with $4K

LAWRENCE — A man wearing a baseball cap handed a teller an apologetic note before walking away with close to $4,000 in a quiet robbery of the Sovereign Bank at Stadium Plaza on Route 114 late yesterday morning.

"Sorry, give me money," said the note the teller received from the man at 11:18 a.m., Detective Brian Voisine wrote in his report. Investigators retrieved the note and are examining it for fingerprints.

One witness reported seeing a purplish-black minivan leaving the scene, which may have been connected to the robbery.

But about 10 minutes passed from the time of the robbery until the bank notified police.

"We've got a pretty good picture of the guy," Lawrence police Chief John Romero said.

"Somebody has to know this individual and should be able to recognize him. So, we're looking for some help from the public in solving this crime," the chief said.

The robber made no effort to conceal his face and didn't display a weapon, police said.

Romero said most of the bank robberies investigated by police don't involve weapons.

This is the second time this year that the bank at 460 S. Union St. has been robbed. On April 25, a man pulled off a similar heist at the bank, passing a demand note while not displaying a weapon.

Anyone having information on yesterday's bank robbery is urged to call the Lawrence police at 978-794-5900, ext. 625.
