LAWRENCE — City assessor Joseph Giuffrida, a fixture at City Hall for the past 36 years, has announced his retirement.

Giuffrida informed Mayor Michael Sullivan that he would retire effective Oct. 31.

Giuffrida, highly regarded by his colleagues for his quick wit, incredible memory and professional expertise, served under nine Lawrence mayors during his tenure at City Hall.

He penned his retirement letter with "sadness," he wrote, noting his city career has been "truly rewarding."

"If I can be of service to you and the City of Lawrence, you only need ask," he wrote.

He thanked his co-workers for both their help and "most importantly their friendship."

Budget and Finance Director Mark Andrews, who works closely with Giuffrida, described him as a "real institution with an institutional memory to go with it."

City Hall, Andrews said, has not just been Giuffrida's workplace, "but his home away from home."
