Kids come out on top at Rotary Club golf tourney

The Lawrence Rotary Club golf tournament raised about $13,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence scholarship program.

The tournament was played at the Haverhill Country Club on Sept. 28. Some 70 people took part.

Winning the tourney were: Jim Edholm, Bob Eddy, Bob Heitz and Steve Gruenberg, all of Andover. Placing second were: Pete Peterson of North Andover, Rich LeBeouf of Andover, Bob Cochrane of Andover and Ray Milliard of Andover; and placing third were: George Trethewey of Dedham and Rick Shaw, George Shattuck and Gary Cedrone, all of Andover. Winner of the longest drive was Steve Gruenberg of Andover and the closest to the pin was won by Ed Hunter of Andover.

The event, which included silent and live auctions, was chaired by Kathy Boshar, president-elect of Rotary, and committee members Pete Peterson, Dick Levis, Ed Hunter, Steve Gruenberg, Yvonne Allard, Wayne Simmons, Lee Fastnacht and Tom Kelly.

Black Cat Benefit Bash

METHUEN — Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley is throwing a Black Cat Benefit Bash tonight, from 6 to 9, at Nevins Memorial Library, 305 Broadway.

The Mill City Dancers and The Lowell Devils' Dance Troupe will perform, and psychic Valeria will do readings.

There will be appetizers will be prepared by local chefs and fresh apple cider at this silent auction fundraiser.

Formal, casual or costumed attire is appropriate. Proceeds will help Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley buy food, provide medical care and pay for sterilization clinics for feral, stray and foster cats in its care.

Pink rubber ducks to invade Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER — Hundreds of pink rubber ducks will be released into Mendel Pond Tuesday at Merrimack College in observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The ducks will float in the pond for a week.

A dedication ceremony and release will be held at 4:30 p.m.

The pink ducks were sold on campus for $1 and personalized with names of breast cancer heroes and messages of hope and support.

Proceeds will benefit the Monica Cooper Children of Breast Cancer Fund scholarship for children who have lost parents to breast cancer.

Soccer group discusses bylaws

METHUEN — Methuen Youth Soccer Association will hold a special meeting Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. to discuss and vote on changes to the current MYSA bylaws.

The meeting will be in the auditorium at the Comprehensive Grammar School, 100 Howe St.

YMCA offers babysitters course

METHUEN — The Methuen YMCA is holding baby sitters training for students in grades six to nine, ages 11-15, on Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The course offers hands-on training with a certified instructor and lessons focus on basic care, accident prevention, proper emergency response and basic first aid for common injuries and illnesses.
